Disorders

Disorders as is pertains to speech pathology revolve around communication. Communication disorders fall into 5 categories that we deal with commonly at Hello Speech Therapy.

Neurogenic Disorders

Neurogenic speech disorders are defined as an inability to exchange information with others due to nervous system impairment. In the simplest terms, these are broken down into simple groups “in” and “out”.

The “In” group or receptive disorders deal with understanding what you see (read) or what you hear.

The “out” group or expressive disorders deal with how you communicate with others. Fluent disorders where you may speak continually without having a directed topic. Or non-fluent where it’s very difficult to form words.

Speech & Language Delays

These generally occur when children are behind in the language development. This could mean they

  • have less words then expected
  • are not putting together sentences
  • are not using age appropriate language in school
  • are not picking up social language - these are the hidden rules of communication which are often overlooked by children with autism such as
    • taking turns in conversation
    • greeting people as they come in
    • making eye contact
    • reading body language

Speech Sound disorders

Speech sound disorders refers to any combination of difficulties of these three areas:

  1. Perception – sometimes children and adults are unable to identify the specific speech sounds
  2. Motor production – use their tounge lips and teeth to make the correct sounds
  3. Phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segments – stressing the correct parts of a word

Different combinations of these three areas are what make it hard for your speech to be understood.
